Murchison Falls Safari; a trip to Murchison falls national park (MFNP) – Uganda’s largest and oldest national park / conservation area promises so much and comes with a lot of anticipation and excitement.
The Park covers an area of 3,840 square kilometers and was first gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 and elevated to national park status in 1952 becoming one of the first national parks in Uganda.
It is located in North-Western Uganda and the distance from Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park is about 305 kilometers and takes 5 hours of driving to get there.
The Park is home to a variety of wildlife including 76 mammal species and 451 bird species. Four of the big five can be found here and primates including patas monkeys and about 800 chimpanzees which live within Budongo forests and Kaniyo Pabidi.
Bird species include Goliath Heron – the largest heron in the world, Shoebill Stork, Grey Crowned Cranes – Uganda’s national bird. Also seen along the banks of the Nile are the Blue-headed Coucal, Swamp Flycatcher, Squacco Heron, African Jacana, Sandpipers, Denham’s Bustard, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, Black-billed Barbet, Black-headed Gonolek, Eastern Grey Plantain-eater, Piapiac, Silverbird, Weaver Birds, Pied, Giant and Malachite Kingfishers, Red-throated Bee-eater, White-browed Sparrow Weaver, Speckle-fronted Weaver and African Quail-Finch.
On your Murchison falls safari, you can also look forward to observing the magnificent falls from which the park obtains its name; here, the Victoria Nile plunges 45m over the remnant rift valley wall through an 8 meters gap, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, a thunderous roar and a signature rainbow – the centrepiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids.
