Lake Bunyonyi is perfectly located in the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda, near the border with Rwanda. It is one of the most serene and beautiful destinations in East Africa, also known as the “Place of Little Birds.” Bunyonyi is the second deepest Lake in Africa, after Lake Tanganyika, and it is famous for its emerald islands, mist-covered mornings, and a calm, peaceful atmosphere. If you’re looking for the perfect spot to relax after a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi is the ideal place for you.
The Islands of Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi has 29 unique islands, each with its own story. The most famous amongst them is Punishment Island (Akampene). Traditionally, Bakiga girls who got pregnant before marriage would be dumped there by their families and left alone to perish, sending a strong warning to others.
However, bachelors and widowed men who could not afford the bride price as the custom required would rescue such ladies and marry them freely. Today, it stands as a small, grassy patch with a single tree, serving as a reminder of ancient traditions. Other islands like Bushara and Njuyeera offer lush gardens and quiet retreats for their visitors.
Major Activities
- Canoeing & Island Hopping: The most authentic way to explore the lake is in a traditional motorised dugout canoe. Gliding through the calm waters while visiting different islands is a truly magical experience. Life jackets are provided to keep the experience safe.
- Safe Swimming: Unlike many other African lakes, Lake Bunyonyi is free from bilharzia, hippos, and crocodiles. Its deep, fresh waters are perfect for a refreshing swim or a jump off a jetty.
- Bird Watching: True to its name, the lake is a haven for over 200 bird species. Keep your binoculars ready for sightings of the Grey Crowned Crane, weavers, and kingfishers.
- Cultural Visits: Take a guided walk to meet the Batwa Pygmy community in this area. Learning about their history, forest traditions, and how they survived in the forests, and vibrant dances, offers a deep connection with the Bakiga people and culture.
- Hiking and Scenic Views: For the best views, hike up the surrounding terraced hills. The panoramic vista of the islands scattered across the water as the morning mist lifts is a photographer’s dream.
