- Where Your Gorilla Romance Happens: Uganda vs Rwanda
For most couples travelling from Europe, there are two main destinations for gorilla trekking: Uganda and Rwanda. We operate in both, and each offers a different style and feeling of adventure.
Uganda: The Big, Wild Journey for Explorers in Love
Uganda is a perfect holiday destination for couples who want a full, varied journey – the kind of trip you’ll be telling stories about for years. Gorilla trekking in Uganda happens at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. A gorilla permit costs $800 to see these gentle primates.
Why couples choose Uganda with Achieve Global Safaris
- Excellent overall value compared to Rwanda
- Many habituated gorilla families and different trekking routes; Bwindi has 23 gorilla families currently in 4 trekking sectors, and 1 habituated family in Mgahinga Park
- Easy to pair your gorilla trek with other activities such as golden monkey trekking, cultural tours, coffee experiences, chimp trekking in Kibale Forest, romantic sunset safaris in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, Boat cruises among hippos and crocodiles, and hiking
- Plenty of small, private lodges ideal for couples
- Uganda has plenty of adventures and offers longer stays without feeling like a routine. You can spend 8 to days here and keep wanting more.
- Imagine road trips through rolling green hills and villages, and nights around a fire sharing stories with your guide and local traditional dances. That and more is what Uganda offers.
Rwanda: Fast-Track Luxury for Time-Pressed Couples
Rwanda is all about high‑impact adventure with smooth, polished logistics – great for couples who want something extraordinary in a shorter time. Seeing the Gorillas in Rwanda takes place at Volcanoes National Park, and the permit costs $1,500 per person, per trek. Some of the reasons couples could consider choosing to visit Rwanda include;
- A shorter distance from the airport in Kigali to the gorilla trekking base in Musanze, with only a 2 to 3-hour drive.
- Stylish lodges, chic boutique hotels, and excellent service
- Because of the small size of the country, it is ideal if you have 4 to 7 days and want to experience remarkable wildlife encounters.
- It is also easy to add a night or two in Kigali for fine dining, culture, and history!
- Rwanda offers a compact, high-end escape that still feels wild
Therefore, choose Uganda with Achieve Global Safaris if you want a longer, more varied adventure, or Rwanda with Achieve Global Safaris if you want a short, intense, and polished gorilla holiday.
- When Should Couples Go Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking is possible all year, but the feel of your adventure changes with the season.
Drier seasons are a classic couple’s trekking window, and that is, June to September, and December to February. During this time, there is less rain, which makes for firmer trails (although there is always some mud), and generally clearer forest views with better photography opportunities. However, these seasons are very competitive with high demand for permits, and you should book your permits well in advance!
Gorilla trekking is also possible during the rainy seasons for couples who don’t mind the mud, also known as the low season, because there are usually a few visitors around these months, and there are usually some discounts to benefit from!
During the rainy season, you can expect heavier showers and slippery muddy trails, fewer visitors, which offers flexibility, and the forest is at its most lush and vibrant. Most couples from Europe target June to September and the Christmas/New Year period. If you both enjoy a bit of a challenge and don’t mind some mud, the low seasons can feel especially wild and intimate
- Traveling From Europe to your Gorilla Trekking Destination.
Flights from Europe: you will usually have one connection from major European cities. For Uganda (Bwindi / Mgahinga with Achieve Global Safaris), you will fly to Entebbe International Airport (EBB)
Typical routes include:
- Via Amsterdam (KLM)
- Via Brussels (Brussels Airlines)
- Via Doha (Qatar Airways)
- Via Dubai (Emirates)
- Via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines)
For Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park with Achieve Global Safaris) you will fly to Kigali International Airport (KGL). The route to Kigali usually connects Via Brussels, Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul and other major hubs
Reaching the Gorilla Parks Together: having arrived in the country, you will need to travel to the specific location for your trek. Uganda offers scenic road trip options from Entebbe to Bwindi with 8 to 10 hours of driving in a comfortable 4X4 Land Cruiser. This can be a lovely adventure as you enjoy shared playlists in the car, roadside fruit stops, and observing the changing landscapes out of the window. This journey can also be broken into 2 days with a stopover at Lake Mburo or Bunyonyi.
Alternatively, you can fly from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip, which takes 1 to 1and a half hours and a 1 to 2-hour drive from the airstrip to the lodge, where you will have more time to enjoy each other’s company.
In Rwanda, you can be picked up from the airport or hotel in Kigali and driven to Musanze in 2 to 3 hours, and you rest at your lodge.
What Does a Gorilla Trip Cost for Two?
Below are rough, road-only estimates per person, excluding flights from Europe. Achieve Global Safaris creates tailor-made itineraries, so final prices depend on the exact route, lodges, and time of the year.
Uganda: Adventure and Value for Couples; a Mid-Range Trip for (7–10 days)
Approx €2,000–€3,500 per person, and such a trip includes:
- Comfortable, couple-friendly lodges and guesthouses
- Private 4×4 vehicle and driver/guide for just the two of you
- 1 gorilla permit (or more if you’d like a second trek)
- Most meals, all park fees, and planned activities
High-End / Fly-In Safaris range from €3,500–€6,000+ per person and come with;
- Upscale lodges with beautiful views and cosy rooms
- Internal flights instead of long road transfers
- Private guiding and more personalised touches for couples, including personal butlers at the lodges
The easiest way to plan your Gorilla trekking trip from Europe is by letting us handle the logistics:
- You tell us your preferred month and trip length
- We help you choose Uganda, Rwanda, or a combination based on your style and budget.
- We check permit availability around your ideal dates.
- Once you confirm, we reserve and pay for your permits, then lock in your trekking dates.
- Together, we build the rest of your romantic adventure around those fixed gorilla days.
For peak periods like July–September and Christmas, we recommend securing permits 3–6 months in advance.
- Visas, Vaccines, and Health: Couple Prep 101
For Passports and Visas, you need to check the basics early. Your passports should normally have at least 6 months’ validity beyond your return date and at least 1–2 blank pages each. Many European nationals can apply online for a Uganda e-Visa, apply online for a Rwanda e-Visa, or use an East Africa Tourist Visa if visiting multiple countries (e.g., Uganda + Rwanda + Kenya). Achieve Global Safaris can guide you through which visa you’ll need, but always double-check your own government’s travel advice from official immigration websites.
Vaccinations and Malaria: plan a travel clinic visit 6–8 weeks before your departure date. You will likely discuss yellow fever, which is commonly required, especially if you transit through or arrive from a yellow‑fever‑risk country and you will need to carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate to obtain a visa. Other recommended vaccines (depending on your history) include tetanus, diphtheria, polio, hepatitis A (and possibly B), and typhoid. You are also advised to get malaria prophylaxis because many gorilla areas have many mosquitoes and malaria. Your doctor will recommend suitable tablets for both of you.
Travel Insurance for Two: your insurance policies should cover;
- Medical treatment and hospital care
- Emergency evacuation from remote areas
- Hiking/trekking (altitude between 1,100m and 2700 Meters)
- Trip cancellation or curtailment (including sudden illness before your trek)
We can help you understand what to look for in a policy, but the choice of insurer is entirely yours.
- How Fit Do You Need to Be as a Couple?
Gorilla trekking can vary from “a pleasant hike” to “the toughest walk you’ve ever done together”.
What Determines Trek Difficulty? Location of the gorillas on the day of trekking. It is important to note that gorillas move overnight, so, no two treks are the same. The altitude is usually between 1,200m and 2,600m and the terrain with steep climbs and descents, mud, roots, and slippery paths, thick vegetation, vines, and nettles can all make the trek difficult.
Simple Training Plan for Couples: about 6–8 weeks before you travel
- Start taking more walks together, especially with hills or stairs.
- Once or twice a week, do a longer walk (1–2 hours) with a small daypack.
- Break in your hiking boots properly – blisters are not romantic.
If either of you has:
- Knee or back problems
- Heart or lung conditions
- Limited mobility
Let us know in advance, and we can:
- Request a relatively easier trekking route where possible
- Arrange porters to support you on the trail
- Discuss options like sedan chairs (in parks where they are available, at extra cost)
- What Couples Should Pack for a Gorilla Trek
You don’t need matching expedition gear – just some key pieces that work well in the forest.
Clothing for Trekking
- Waterproof hiking boots (already broken in)
- Long hiking trousers (lightweight, quick‑drying; avoid shorts)
- Long-sleeved, breathable top
- Light waterproof jacket or poncho
- Warm layer (fleece or similar) for cold, misty mornings
- Hat or cap (for sun or light rain)
- Good walking socks (consider a spare pair in your day-pack)
Helpful/Handy Extras
- Lightweight gloves (gardening or trekking gloves) to protect hands when grabbing branches and vines
- Gaiters (optional but very useful in deep mud)
- Buff or light scarf for added warmth or sun protection
